How Much Does It Cost to Charge a Tesla?

The average cost to fill up your Tesla will depend upon several factors, including how you charge your car, the model you drive, where you charge your car and your driving habits. The average cost ranges between $8.28 and $14.40 when charging at home.

Charging at home is the most economical way to refuel your car. Depending on your model, it will require anywhere from 57.5 kWh to 100 kWh to fully charge. Each model varies in terms of battery capacity. Below is a table that expresses the average cost to fully charge a Tesla at home. These numbers are based on the average US electricity rate for the US, so it may vary depending on your energy costs.

EV chargers are not 100% efficient, so a few extra kWh will be needed to complete a full charge. Tesla chargers are estimated to be 90% efficient, but that will vary with the model of charger used.

If you are out and about and need to charge your car, then a charging station will accommodate. Below is a table of average cost to charge at a station based on models.

There are Tesla branded charging stations called Tesla Superchargers, which will fluctuate in price depending on the time of day and area you're in. These superchargers greatly reduce the time needed to charge your car, adding 200 miles within 15 minutes. These are great if you can find one in your area.

The rates above are averages and can greatly vary depending on where you live. See the map below for state-based averages.

Other Factors

How you drive your vehicle will impact the cost of charging. When a Tesla battery is cold, it won't hold a charge as well. If you live in a colder climate, you may need to charge more frequently.

How you use your vehicle will also matter. If you're using your batteries on blasting the AC or heat, you may lose a charge more quickly and need to refuel.

Comparing Cost to Gas

When comparing the cost to charge a Tesla to using a gas powered vehicle, the numbers are staggering. The national gas price average this year is $3.48 per gallon. Kelly Blue Book states that the average monthly expense for a gas-powered vehicle is $143. With a Tesla, you're looking at $36-$53 per month, so you cut your cost in half. If you were to power your Tesla with solar panels, that cost could be reduced even further!
